A Short History of Pilates  |  The Man and the Method

Joseph PilatesJoseph Hubertus Pilates (1883-1967) was German born, but most of his work was developed in the US where he lived from 1926 to his death. Perhaps because his own childhood was beset by poor health, he became passionate about all aspects of human health, and was interested in everything from body-building to the martial arts and yoga. He was particularly fascinated by the importance of the coordination of body, mind and spirit. He was always learning, always exploring, and over the years he invented an array of apparatus and exercises designed to help people improve their health in a method he named ‘Contrology’, and his life was spent on a mission to transmit this passion and belief to others. Many of the sometimes bizarre-looking inventions that he devised are still widely in use in Pilates studios around the globe, and the majority of his beliefs have held true – he was even heard to say during his own lifetime that “I am a man 50 years ahead of my time”!

Following his death in 1967, the 1970s turned out to be a boom decade for Pilates as the Hollywood celebrities discovered the method in Beverly Hills. As is still the case today, once celebrities start to endorse something, the media generally takes note, and by the late 1980s, Pilates entered the fitness mainstream, no longer the preserve of the elite. Celebrities of course still endorse and credit Pilates for giving them their toned and lean physiques, but it has also become obligatory practice for many athletes training and competing at high levels in many disciplines ranging from ballet to Olympic level sport. Having hit and stayed firmly in the mainstream, Pilates has become hugely popular worldwide for any and all of us looking to improve our health, get fit and strong and feel great in our bodies.

“If, at the age of 30, you are stiff and out of shape, you are old.

If, at 60, you are supple and strong, then you are young.”

~ Joseph Pilates

Pilates  – a way of Life

Joseph Pilates originally called his unique form of movement Contrology “the complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.” It later became as the Pilates method.  Pilates is a strength based workout designed to lengthen and strengthen your muscles. Every exercise is initiated from your Powerhouse thus teaching your body to stabilize before it moves. A consistent Pilates practice will not only change how your body looks but also how it feels! In the words of Joseph Pilates;

In 10 sessions you’ll feel different, 20 you’ll look different and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.”

~ Joseph Pilates

What I try to communicate through my teaching of the Pilates method is that it is just not yet another form of exercise, but is a way of life.  Pilates is about using functional movement to connect your mind and body, which can then be applied to your daily lives.  For me, it is not something that you do for one hour once a week, then quickly forget as you get on with your every-day life!  Of course, this takes time and effort, but the rewards are immense, with the benefits of Pilates numerous, but including:

  • Improve posture and alignment
  • Combined strength with flexibility
  • Relieve stress and back pain
  • Prevent injury
  • Increase muscular tone and endurance
  • Toned, long and lean muscles
  • Boost core strength and stability
  • Develop balance and coordination
  • Heighten body awareness
  • Improve and enhance athletic performance

Every Pilates session should work all the different muscle groups, in a balanced, holistic way, helping to create a body that is balanced and strong. It is designed to improve posture, tighten what is loose, render more flexible what is tight.  It is both physical and mental. I want you to leave your Pilates session feeling invigorated and alive, aware of your body and the wonders that it is capable of.
